Results First

Results First is a joint effort of the Pew Charitable Trusts and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation that works with states to implement a benefit-cost analysis approach that helps policymakers invest in policies and programs that are proven to work. In 2017, North Carolina became the 27th state to partner with the Pew-MacArthur Results First Initiative.

The Office of State Budget and Management (OSBM) works with state agencies to collect and populate data to complete the inventory of currently funded programs, review which ones have evidence, and run the benefit-cost model. Once the benefit-cost analysis has been completed, OSBM and partner agencies review results and use them to inform how programs are designed and how resources are allocated across programs. For each policy area, OSBM publishes program inventories and reports. Please see the links below for more information on each policy area.

North Carolina's Results First project is part of the national Pew-MacArthur Results First Initiative and was developed based on an econometric model designed by the Washington State Institute for Public Policy.
