In honor of International Internal Audit Awareness Month, internal audit offices across state government are marking the month with efforts to educate and celebrate. Governor Stein kicked off the month by proclaiming May Internal Audit Awareness Month for North Carolina.

“Internal Audit Awareness Month is a great time to consider the role internal auditors play in the state,” said Council of Internal Auditing Executive Director Barbara Baldwin. “Across agencies and universities internal auditors work to reduce risk, ensure efficient business operations, and protect state resources. It is often unseen and under the radar, but the work provides value to all North Carolinians.”

In North Carolina, internal auditing in state government is governed by the Internal Auditing Act. State organizations must create internal auditing programs that meet Global Internal Auditing Standards (GIAS). Smaller agencies or organizations can contract for this work. Internal auditing in the state government is guided by the Council of Internal Auditing.

Internal audit groups in universities and agencies use this month as an opportunity to explain more about what they do. Many have shared information in employee newsletters or provided presentations at staff meetings or internal training sessions. Internal auditors also often use a special electronic badge (pictured above) in their communications for the month.

Internal auditors bring a systematic approach to evaluate and improve organization governance, risk management, processes, and controls. They can serve as consultants helping organizations accomplish their objectives.

Since the 1990s the Institute of Internal Auditors has observed International Internal Audit Awareness Month. During May, internal auditors around the world share examples of how the profession provides value to organizations, spotlight the profession's commitment to good governance and risk management, and explain how internal auditors protect the public interest.

About the Council of Internal Auditing

The Council of Internal Auditing was created by the General Assembly in 2007. The Council promotes statewide standards, performance, and training for internal auditing in state government. The State Controller chairs the Council. The other members are the State Budget Director, Attorney General, Secretary of Administration, Secretary of Revenue, two Legislative appointees, and the State Auditor.
